Cogongrass – Georgia Survey and ControlNovember 10, 1999 Cogongrass, Imperata cylindrica, has been found and treated at five sites in southern Georgia. It appears that cogongrass has a very limited distribution in Georgia and we are concerned that it could become a fire hazard along highways and harm pine plantings. Brantley County – In November 1996, I found a 150 foot site on ROW along US 301 at Bachlott. The origin was probably the Winokur site. Georgia DOT sprayed the site and eradicated the cogongrass. Charlton County – In April 1996, cogongrass was found at the site of an old produce stand along the east side of US 301 south of Winokur by Nancy Coile, FDACS. The origin of the cogongrass was probably straw packing with melons from Florida. Georgia DOT sprayed the ROW and PPQ sprayed the edge of three properties. PPQ has sprayed about 100 sprigs there in 1999. Decatur County – A large infestation of cogongrass was found in 1995 at the former Cato Nursery on East Alice Street in Bainbridge by James Allison, Georgia DNR. During the past four years, cooperative control by federal, state, city, and property owners has greatly reduced the infestation. During October, the area was surveyed again and all cogongrass found was treated. Dougherty County – In June 1997, I found cogongrass at the former Cato Nursery along US 82 in Albany. Two spots have been treated in a mobile home sales yard and near the house in back. The cogongrass has been eradicated there. Seminole County – Dr. Greg MacDonald, UGA, found cogongrass along a county road east of Donalsonville on April, 1998. PPQ visited the site with CES, met the owner, and started herbicide treatments of the ROW and field edge in May. The site was sprayed again in 1999 and the cogongrass appears to be eradicated.
