Beach Vitex

What is Beach Vitex?

A perennial shrub native to the Pacific Rim. Introduced into the continental US in the 1980s as a beach stabilization plant. It can crowd out native species and disturb sea turtle nesting habitat. This plant can sprawl more than 60 ft, and often escapes landscape plantings and infests sensitive dune sites.

Sand dunes with fence sitting on top left. Spreading green vines covering beach behind fence and spreading through fence pickets down sand dune.
Oval leaf clusters with light purple flowers grow one after another on trailing beach vitex vine.
